Periodic Table of Elements The periodic table of elements is the most important chemistry reference there is. It is a tabular method of displaying the chemical elements which was first devised by a Russian Chemist, Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Mendeleev intended the table to illustrate recurring “periodic” trends in the properties of the elements. The layout of the table has been refined and extended over time, as many new elements have been discovered, and new theoretical models have been developed to explain chemical behavior. Today, the 116 elements (94 are naturally found on Earth, 22 are synthetic elements which are artificially made) of the periodic table are arranged left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number and also, it is generally coincides with increasing atomic mass.
