What is percutaneous and subcutaneous administration of injection, explain technique?
A subcutaneous injection is administered into the subcutis, the layer of skin directly below the dermis and epidermis, collectively referred to as the cutis. Subcutaneous injections are highly effective in administering such medications as insulin, morphine, etc. In this, the injection drug is deposited below the skin, not into the muscle or vein. Percutaneous means any medical procedure where access to inner organs or other tissue is done via needle-puncture of the skin, rather than by using an “open” approach where inner organs or tissue are exposed (typically with the use of a scalpel). So any injection through the skin, be it in muscle, or an injection into a joint, is percutaneous.
