What is penetrance and incomplete penetrance in terms of genetics?

Incomplete penetrance is when you have a genotype that says you should have trait “X” but you do not express it. Complete penetrance means that if you have the genotype for trait “X” you will always express the trait. Only example I can think of off the top of my head is polydactyly (spelled wrong i’m sure) or having six fingers or toes. Even if you have the genotype for 6 fingers you may only have 5 fingers on each hand meaning that the trait is not fully penetrant.
