A peer reviewed journal is one dedicated to a specific academic, medical, engineering, etc. area. Before being accepted for publication, these articles are studied by other experts in the field. Usually, these articles are accounts of research done by the author in whatever field. For example, an article on nuclear physics would be first read by other nuclear physicists to see if it made sense scientifically before it is accepted for publication.
