What is pediatric orthopaedics?
Pediatric orthopaedics is the study of and medical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in children. Conditions include congenital orthopaedic deformities, bone growth disorders, fractures, and joints and muscle disorders in children under the age of 18. Pediatric orthopaedists use many techniques customized to the medical treatment of children including casts, braces and splints, surgery when needed, and physical therapy. Orthopaedic care of children can differ from adults because their bones are still developing and treatment can affect the growth plates, and muscle and tendon development.
