What is PECOS and how does it affect me as a DMEPOS supplier?
In an effort to ensure that the referring/ordering physician on a DMEPOS claim has a current enrollment record in Medicare and is of a specialty that is eligible to order and refer, all physicians that order/refer DMEPOS items must have updated enrollment information in the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS). This requirement is being implemented in two phases: • For Phase 1, beginning October 5, 2009, if the referring/ordering physician on a DMEPOS claim does not have current enrollment information in PECOS, you will receive a warning message on your CEDI GenResponse Report. • For Phase 2, beginning January 3, 2011, if the referring/ordering physician on a DMEPOS claim does not have current enrollment information in PECOS, the claim will be rejected.
