What is (PBS) Positive Behavior Support?
Well, in this case the letters PBS don’t stand for that wonderful public television station. Instead, PBS is a very powerful, effective program that schools do to help students learn to become safe, respectful and responsible! In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by using punishment-based strategies. Things like reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions and expulsions. Research has shown that the use of punishment, especially when it is not consistent and in the absence of other positive strategies, is not effective. Introducing, modeling, practicing and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and reinforcing students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to happen before responding.
