WHAT IS PASTEL DRAWING?
Pastel is a medium, for the visual arts, which allows both line techniques as in drawing, and area techniques as in painting. There is considerable similarity between the techniques in pastel art and that using charcoal, with the added aspects of color. Using pastels to create art is a centuries old technique. During the eighteenth century, European artists such as Jean Baptiste Simeon Chardin, used pastels to paint portraits. Renowned artist Edgar Degas used them more than any other in his time and was followed by his student Mary Cassatt. Pastels are characterized by their soft shading and subtle hues. Pastels come in various forms including oil pastels, chalk pastels, and pastel pencils. Using pastels to create art such as landscapes and portraits is a rewarding and often times challenging endeavor. Click to enlarge FINISHING A matte fixative will be used to protect the drawing.
