What is painting in layers and why do people paint in layers?
Although this in no way encompasses every advantage here are a few benefits available when using a layered approach to painting. Painting in layers allows you to build up a painting. There are several effects that are facilitated and achieved adding a dynamic to the image such as color interaction between areas that allow the previous layer to show through and refinement of the drawing. Achieving the illusion of a color with variations between layers…..some including the previously described breaks or openings and transparency rather than attempting to premix and apply a color with a single layered brush stroke will produce optical effects that are stimulating on various levels. An orange color, for instance, can lay there on the surface as a flat lifeless swatch of color. While the same color can be achieved using a number of cross-techniques that work to produce the color with an optical activity that is more interesting and sometimes more lifelike or true to life when viewed.
