What is Ovary Removal Surgery (Oophorectomy)?
Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of one or both ovaries. The ovaries are small organs located on each side of the uterus and contain eggs responsible for reproduction. If only one ovary is removed, a woman may continue to menstruate and have children. If both ovaries are removed, menstruation stops and a woman will no longer bear children. The removal of the ovaries is most commonly performed when cancer is present. They may also be removed as part of a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Ovary removal can be done through laparoscopic surgery or through abdominal incision.
