What Is Outlaw Country?
Outlaw Country is a secondary genre of country music that began in the 1950s, but didn’t become recognized until the late 1960s and the 1970s. It continued its popularity into the 1980s. The popularity of the genre has focused on “self-proclaimed outlaw” artists like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, David Allen Coe, Hank Williams, Jr., and the like. The reason for the movement has been attributed to the reaction to the “Nashville Sound” promoted by artists like Chet Atkins. Outlaw Country is Channel 63 on Sirius XM radio. It features the artists of country music considered the “Outlaws”. Recordings by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and many more are played on this station.
