What is Orgone Therapy?
One of Reich’s most important and lasting contributions was a unique treatment for emotional disorders. He began as a psychoanalyst but moved away from Freuds method of free association. Like many thoughout history, Reich recognized the existence of a biologic energy in all living organisms. This energy became fundamental to his treatment approach, which he called “orgone therapy.” The name sounds a bit odd, but Reich coined the term from the word organism. His work with patients had convinced him that the disturbance of an individuals energy state was the underlying cause of many emotional illnesses. The therapy that Reich pioneered uses a unique psychotherapy approach along with the release of long repressed emotions, such as anger and sadness, in a safe and secure environment. The aim of orgone therapy is to restore and balance the life energy to improve an individual’s emotional health and sense of well-being. There are many who claim to practice some form of “Reichian therapy” or
