ANS11: When a PC & CNC is connected through RS-232 interface, the ground voltage level of PC & CNC is made common by data cable. Many a times there is a strong possibility of ground loop currents. In fact in the rainy season, wet earth & power fluctuations create variations in earth potential at different points in the same campus. This cause ground loop currents in random directions. If this current is large enough, it will destroy RS-232 port of CNC as well as that of PC. The lightening in the rainy season will further induce the voltage surge. An OPTO-ISOLATOR is a safety device. It uses optical isolation between RS-232 signals of PC & CNC. But the data information is made transperant. It has fllowing advantages – 1. The grounds are separated, eliminating ground loop currents. 2. Voltage spikes are supressed & signal conditioning is done.
