What is Optional Practical Training?
Optional Practical Training is a work permit issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS formerly INS). You can apply for practical training after completion of your program of studies. A student preparing a thesis can apply following the thesis defense. Students taking the comprehensive exam can apply after taking the exam. This permit is valid for one year. The Office of International Students assists all students with this process including application review of all documentation and submission to the USCIS.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a one-year employment authorization that allows you to engage in legal off campus employment to gain practical experience upon completion of your program. It can also be done part time or when the school is not in session. Employment authorization is granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service upon recommendation of the school. Processing your employment authorization may take about 90 days. Therefore, it is essential that your application be submitted at the beginning of your last semester at Marymount.
