Optical Packet Edge System is Nortel Networks implementation of RPR technology. Ethernet service modules or circuit packs provide native Ethernet LAN connectivity interfaces to the SONET Multiservice Platforms: Optical Metro 3300, 3400, 3500 and the TransportNode OC-48. Interface types of 10/100BaseT, 100BaseFX, and GigE are supported based on the platform. These modules are distributed around the metro ring providing Virtual LANs, flexible bandwidth provisioning, prioritized services, and LAN learning bridge functionality. Optical Packet Edge System is implemented utilizing native Ethernet concepts making it transparent to higher layer applications such as IP routing, Internet, VoIP, video and Network Attached Storage.
