What is Ontario doing to replace coal-fired generation in the province?
The government remains committed to improving the health of Ontarians and contributing to the sustainability of the environment by replacing coal-fired generation in the province with cleaner sources of energy. A regulation under the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) will ensure that coal is not used to generate electricity at the Atikokan, Lambton, Nanticoke and Thunder Bay coal generating facilities after December 31, 2014 . Additionally, Ontario Power Generation is taking additional steps to reduce its use of coal in the interim period. Ontario’s coal-fired plants are among the largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions in the province and among the largest emitters of smog-causing pollutants. Ontario is the only jurisdiction in North America that is not building more coal-fired generation, but phasing it out.
