What is One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) all about?
Will I be able to buy a laptop for $100? 08-30-2006: The One Laptop Per Child is something that is close to reality. This is going to be a pretty big leap for computers and mankind. The short answer: In early 2005 the project was announced by MIT Media Lab chairman Nicholas Negroponte: produce laptops in large quantities to be sold at an affordable $100/pc to governments of technologically underdeveloped countries. The laptops would then be distributed by the government to the children. The project has been steadily overcoming many hurdles, from powering the laptops to hardware, software and distribution. They will not be for sale as the effort is a non-profit one. Although, it will be interesting to see if a few will pop up on eBay here and there! Full details may be found on www.laptop.org. The site includes a wiki, a FAQ, a timeline, links to press coverage and more. Hopefully in 2007 shipments will start.
