The semi conductor industry is one example where the HEPA filters help to create a perfectly clean environment. An average human hair is 40 micro meters, but reliable HEPA filters can remove down to .3 micro meters. Plants also will use a downward air flow system that forces particulates down, along with gravity, into a bed beneath the working area, so that the chance of a particulate coming into contact with a computer chip is highly unlikely. There are various method of monitoring the contamination levels in the plant, but the most common is by using lasers to see how many different things it bounces off of before return back to the sensor.
