What is Omega 3 Metabolic Pathway?
Omega 3 metabolic pathway is the name given to different forms omega 3 fatty acids take inside the body from the time they are consumed to ultimate absorption by the bloodstream. The chemistry of how they are converted to other forms is a bit complex. ALA or alpha-linolenic acid which is primarily obtained from flax seed oil is the longest-chain omega 3 fatty acid. Chemistry tells us that while reacting with D-6-D enzyme, ALA converts itself into stearidonic acid inside the body. The next step in omega 3 metabolic pathway is the conversion of stearidonic acid into eicosatetraenoic acid after reaction with elongase. This acid transforms into eicosapentaenoic acid when it reacts with D-5-D enzyme. The final stage of ALA is cyclo-oxygenase lypoxygenase which is then used up by the bloodstream as and when required.
