What is Olecranon Bursitis / Students Elbow?
In cases of olecranon bursitis or students elbow, pain originates from below the tip of the elbow where there is a sack of fluid called a bursa. A bursa is used to help lubricate the movement of tissues such as tendons and muscles, preventing frictions with underlying bones/tissues. This is known as the olecranon bursa as the large protruding end of the Ulna bone (which it protects) is called the olecranon. Bursitis can occur as a result of either a direct impact or a repetitive pressure, such as leaning on the elbows regularly (hence the name students elbow!). When it occurs as a result of an impact, the swelling at the back of the elbow can be quite extensive but very localised, appearing like an egg on the back of the elbow. In overuse cases, this is usually less pronounced. Symptoms include: • Pain at the back of the elbow. • A painful swelling on the back of the elbow. • Limited mobility in the elbow. How can bursitis in the elbow be avoided? • Wear elbow guards if playing a game
