What is OKG and is it a better choice than straight glutamine?
Ornithine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (OKG) consists of Ornithine molecules bonded to Alpha-Ketoglutarate molecules. OKG has the same carbon skeleton as glutamine and provides a ready source of glutamine, but contains virtually no ammonia. Consumption of straight glutamine during exercise can add to the accumulation of ammonia because glutamine initially releases ammonia during metabolism. OKG not aids in replenishing glutamine stores, but also acts as an ammonia scavenger to reduce the ammonia burden.
