What is offered in the world language program in middle school?
Students taking Spanish and entering grade 6 are placed into either Strand A or Strand B classes. Strand A is primarily for students who began their foreign language study in kindergarten (the district’s three magnet schools) and Strand B is for students coming from schools with foreign language in grades 3-5. All students are assessed at the end of grade 5 to allow for movement between Strands if appropriate. Continuing Spanish only is offered in the middle schools – there is no beginning level Spanish until ninth grade. Top Beginning level French is available in grade 6. Students who took French at Julian Curtiss Elementary School may also take advanced French classes at Central Middle School. For both French and Spanish, a sequenced program in provided which provides the opportunity for Advanced Placement classes at Greenwich High School.
