What is NYC Department of Probation?
The NYC Department of Probation supervises certain defendants after a conviction as a result of trial or by a guilty plea. Eligible defendants may be placed on probation by a judge for a specific period of time in lieu of or, in addition to, incarceration. Probation sentences range from one to three years for a misdemeanor to up to five years for a felony. Probation officers make sure that offenders meet any special conditions set by the judge, including orders of protections, restitution, community service, and drug treatment.
