What is Northfield Laboratories?
Dr. Gould: Northfield is a company that is focused on developing a hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying resuscitative fluid, usually referred to as a ‘blood substitute.’ A number of characteristics differentiate Northfield from other companies in this space. First, our product PolyHeme is unique among blood substitutes based on its life-saving capability as demonstrated in our previous trials. Second, the indication that we are seeking, namely, life-threatening blood loss in trauma when blood or red blood cells are not immediately available, is unique and addresses a critical, unmet medical need. Third, we’re pursuing a unique regulatory strategy. Currently, we are conducting a groundbreaking Phase III trial where our product, PolyHeme, is being used to treat severely injured and bleeding trauma patients, for the first time in this country, starting at the scene of injury and during transport to a hospital.
