What is normal stool for my newborn?
Newborn stools in the fist few days are called meconium stools (look like tar). This lasts about 24 hrs, and then they turn into transition stools (brownish-paste), then to a normal yellow-brown “seedy” stool. Newborns will stool very frequently during the first few days of life, usually every feeding. They may start to slow down to one per day to every other day if formula fed. If breastfed, infants usually stool every feed mustard-yellow “seedy” stools and sometimes may appear mucousy. After one to two months, breast fed infants may only stool once every two to three days. Please call the office if you have any questions about stooling patterns. We need to know immediately if you see any blood.
