What is Non-Linear Editing ?
Non-linear editing comprises a number processes : 1, Transferring the digital footage from the camera into a computer. 2, Rendering the footage into a format (Mpeg2) using a hardware based rendering engine (such as the Matrox RTX100, that is suitable for broadcasters). 3, Use of software tools (Adobe Premiere Pro, DV Storm) to splice the footage at the correct points and applying transition effects & titles. 4, Use of software tools for audio to mix 24 bit quality audio channels together to form complex polyphonic sound effects and/or Dolby Surround Sound.
This is a process of editing where everything is done inside the computer. Think of your video as a time line. You want to get to a certain spot on that tape. In order to do that, you must fast forward through all of that time in order to get to the spot you want. That’s linear. Non linear is being able to get to any spot on the video instantly. It also means being able to make changes to the timeline in any place with ease, without affecting the rest of the timeline.
