What Is Non-Allergic Rhinitis (NAR)?
Non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) is a type of rhinitis (pronounced rine-ite-iss). Rhinitis means ‘inflammation of the nose’ and in NAR this irritation is not caused by allergy, infection, lesions, polyps or any other illness.1,2 Symptoms may include:1,2 • Runny nose • Stuffy nose • Mucus in the throat (also called post-nasal drip) • Sneezing Unlike allergic rhinitis (which is often called hayfever), itchiness of the eyes, nose or throat is usually absent or mild in NAR.1 NAR can be an extremely annoying and troublesome condition. Management may include avoiding irritants such as perfumes, odours and cigarette smoke, which can trigger the symptoms.1,3 However, some people find they need to seek treatment to provide further relief from symptoms.
