What is Nipple Confusion?
Some health professionals believe that bottle feeding babies (either with expressed breast milk or artificial milk) may lead to nipple confusion. Their theory is that breastfeeding and bottle feeding require different sucking techniques and that once a baby has got used to bottle feeding from a teat, he will find it harder to feed from a breast. If you’re having difficulties and think it may be as a result of nipple confusion, your doctor or health visitor should be able to help. Seek help from someone who can support you to achieve good positioning and attachment, such as Baby CafĂ©. Avoid offering bottle feeds before your baby is 6-8 weeks old just in case.
