What is NHTSAs role in 9-1-1 services?
NHTSA is currently managing two major 9-1-1 activities. The first, the Next Generation 9-1-1 Initiative, is a research and development project funded by the Intelligent Transportation System Public Safety Program. The goal of this project is to design a system that enables the transmission of voice, data, or video from different types of communication devices to the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and onto emergency responder networks. The Initiative seeks to accomplish this by completing a high-level system architecture and a transition plan for the next generation of 9-1-1 services. In addition to the Next Generation 9-1-1 Initiative, NHTSA has been tasked by Congress to establish a National E9-1-1 Implementation Coordination Office (National 9-1-1 Office) in conjunction with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the Department of Commerce.
