What is NeuroDevelopmental Techniques (NDT)?
The approach, based on the Bobath concept, involves techniques of guiding the clients movement with carefully graded stimulation to provide a more normal sensation of active movement. The emphasis is on the quality of movement. The approach was originally developed for use with children with cerebral palsy who move with abnormal synergies involving extensive irradiation of muscle activity. The techniques promote aspects of motor control that are believed to be prerequisites for automatic and voluntary activity: • Normalized postural tone and reciprocal interaction of muscles for distal mobility • Postural adaptation • Graded control of antagonistic muscles during functional activity.
