Net metering occurs when you accumulate an electricity credit with PG&E that can be used any time you need it. When a utility customer connects a solar electric system to the utility’s electrical network, (the grid), the utility puts the customer on a net-metering account. A net-metering account lets the customer average the electrical usage and generation over a one year period. If the customer has a positive credit on their account when the bill is due, the account is zeroed out. The customer does not receive any payment from PG&E for generated electricity that exceeds their usage. The customer will get a monthly statement for their electric account which shows their electric account balance. The electric portion of the bill is only due once a year, but the gas portion is billed and due every month.
