What is Natural Resource Management (NRM)?
Natural Resource Management (NRM) is the management of all activities that use, develop and/or conserve our air, water, land, plants, animals, micro-organisms, and the ecosystems they form. NRM seeks to achieve a balance between economic and social development, and the need to protect biodiversity and to ensure the ongoing health and integrity of all land, marine and aquatic ecosystems. NRM requires an integrated approach to the sustainable use and management of natural resources. This necessitates the involvement of all levels of government, ie local, State and Federal, in cooperation with non-government organisations, community groups and the private sector. Local government plays a key role in NRM including the development and implementation of planning schemes, administration of relevant environmental legislation, support for community-based NRM activities and involvement in regional NRM initiatives.
