What is Natural Gas?
Natural gas is a clean burning fuel used by homes, businesses and industry for heating, cooking, lighting and many other uses. Natural gas is a combustible mixture of hydrocarbon gases that is extracted from reservoirs underneath the earth. It is refined to remove impurities and the clean natural gas is transmitted through thousands of miles of pipelines to distributors throughout the country.
Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons, predominantly methane (CH4). As delivered through the pipeline system, it also contains hydrocarbons such as ethane and propane and other gases such as nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water vapor. It is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and non-carcinogenic. It presents no threat to soil, surface water, or groundwater. Most natural gas is extracted from gas and oil wells. Much smaller amounts are derived from supplemental sources such as synthetic gas, landfill gas and other biogas resources, and coal-derived gas. Unlike other hydrocarbon fuels (e.g. petrol, diesel and LPG), natural gas consists predominantly of a molecule found naturally in the environment, methane. Natural Gas is a fixed supply of gas at a lower pressure that is used is nowadays supplies to many new homes for internal heating, hot water systems and kitchen cooktops. Often a gas room heater will be plugged into a wall bayonet fitting – this uses natural gas. These fittings are now placed externally in patios or backyards for external BBQ consumption. This means that you have a fixed supply of gas at all times and will never run out of gas. Its also cheaper than Bottled Gas(LPG).
