What is National Wild Horse Adoption Day?
With approximately 33,000 wild Mustang and other horses living on federal lands in the Western United States, the Bureau of Land Management has attempted to foster public adoptions and placements of many such equines. This means of reducing the wild herds is intended to encourage the health of the wild herds and to preserve natural resources. More than 220,000 wild horses and burros have been adopted since 1973, according to Bureau of Land Management statistics. Adopted horses generally range from yearlings to six years of age. National Wild Horse Adoption Day organizers hope to realize 1,000 adoptions of wild horses and burros through the event. Online applications for wild horse adoptions will be accepted through September 16th. Internet adoption applications may be filed, and prospective wild horse adopters may view online photos of available equines. Internet adoptions will run from September 2nd through September 16th.
