What is National Council for Prescription Drug Program (NCPDP) version D.0?
National Council for Prescription Drug Program (NCPDP) standard transactions are used for pharmacy drug claims. They were selected as part of the code set standard* under HIPAA for the retail pharmacy environment. NCPDP transactions use National Drug Codes* (NDC) and biologics. Medicare uses the NCPDP standard transactions when billing for durable medical equipment. Even though Medicare is upgrading to the new NCPDP version D.0 as part of this project, Highmark Medicare Services is not a Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractor (DMEMAC) and therefore, does not support NCPDP transactions. * An asterisk denotes a web site that is external to Highmark Medicare Services.
