What is NARA?
NARA is an independent Federal agency within the Executive Branch. NARA ensures, for the citizen and the public servant, for the President and for the Congress and the Courts, ready access to essential evidence that documents the rights of American citizens, the actions of Federal officials, and the national experience. NARA establishes policies and procedures for managing U.S. Government records, preserves the permanently valuable records in the National Archives of the United States, and assists Federal agencies in documenting their activities, administering records management programs, scheduling records, and retiring noncurrent records to Federal records centers.
