Nail fungal infection is the attack of the dermatophytic fungus on or in the nail. Different dermatophytes attack diverse parts of the body, nail fungus is not the same as those that causes jock itch, athlete’s foot or ringworm. There are instances when other dermatophytes or non-dermatophytes cause nail infection such as yeasts and molds. Distal or lateral subungual, white superficial, proximal subungual and candidal are the classifications of toenail fungus. Invading the surface of the nail, Trichophyton interdigitale cause the white superficial nail fungus infection. Entering the nails through the side and edge, the Trichophyton rubrum fungus moves towards the middle of the nail matrix, this is called distal or lateral fungal infection. An HIV infection marker, proximal subungual also originates from Trichophyton rubrum fungus, invades through the proximal fold.
