What is NAC and ALA?
NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) – amino acid useful to all athletes because it increases the levels of glutathiones for almost 500% Glutathione is one of the most potent bodily anti-oxidants found mostly in liver, and there’s some of it in the muscles too. It is synergetic with vitamin C, and because free sulfhydrile groups, NAC can destroy disulfide connections in mucus, making it more liquidy, that’s why NAC is used as a mucolytic, so it is easier to cough it out. The usual dosage for athletes is 600-1200mg. It’s quite expensive too. ALA – alfa-lypoic-acid – antioxidant specific for 2 things – it is water and fat soluble. Although a great anti-oxidant it is still quite expensive, with a usual dosage from 600mg onwards.
