What is N-Hexane?
N-hexane is used as an additive in many consumer products, including food, and is known to be a neurotoxin as a result of long-term exposure. It can cause the degeneration and ultimate failure of the peripheral and even central nervous system in humans, which can include some diseases such as Parkinson’s. N-Hexane, or normal hexane, is used in the extraction of many Soy-based products. N-Hexane is used to remove fat from soy-based products by washing the soybeans in hexane to extract the oil. Products labeled as “made with Organic ingredients” can contain N-hexane, whereas products labeled as “Organic” may not. Hexane residue in foods is not currently monitored by the FDA. A recent electronics manufacturing scandal occurred when Wintek was found to be using N-Hexane as a cleaning solvent when creating touchscreens for consumer electronics. Wintek is rumored to be a supplier for Apple iPod, iPhone and possibly iPad devices.
