What is my ethical responsibility regarding impaired colleagues?
Obviously, most dentists will avoid behavior that could potentially harm patients. But what if a dentist is unable to recognize his or her own impairment? Such is the case with the denial that permeates addiction. Thus, you may be among the few people in a position to identify such behavior and to facilitate help for your colleague. The ADA “Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct” states in part: “Dentists with first-hand knowledge that a colleague is practicing while so impaired have an ethical responsibility to report such evidence to the professional assistance committee of a dental society.” Upon verification of such an expression of concern, Concerned Colorado Dentists (CCD) can intervene to gently urge the dentist to voluntarily seek assessment and help through the Dentist Peer Assistance Program before consequences accrue.
