What is my entitlement to a weekly rest period?
As an adult worker you are entitled to an uninterrupted rest period of not less than 24 hours in each 7-day period. However, if your employer so determines, you are entitled to, either 2 uninterrupted rest periods (each of not less than 24 hours) in each 14-day period, or one uninterrupted rest period of not less than 48 hours in each 14-day period. The entitlement to weekly rest is in addition to the 11-hour daily rest entitlement that must be provided, except where objective or technical reasons concerning the organisation of work would justify incorporating all, or part, of that daily rest into the weekly rest period. Mobile workers in road and rail transport have different rules. They must be given ‘adequate’ rest. Also, HGV and PSV road transport drivers have better entitlements through the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations and the Tachograph Regulations that govern driving hours.
