What is my entitlement to a daily rest period?
As an adult worker, you are entitled to an uninterrupted rest period of not less than 11 consecutive hours in each 24-hour period. The provisions regarding daily rest periods do not apply where a worker’s working time is unmeasured. Derogations from the Regulations rule may be made with regard to shift work or by means of collective agreement or workforce agreements. However, in all cases, (except for workers with unmeasured working time), compensatory rest must be provided. Special arrangements exist for night workers and there are more generous entitlements for young workers. Mobile workers in road and rail transport have different rules. They must be given ‘adequate’ rest.
