What is murrina?

Murrina is a small crystal glass disc used in a variety of glass applications to add a burst of colour to a given creation and is a symbol of the Murano glassmaking tradition (see image at top of the page). It is created by fusing thin Murano crystal glass rods together. Various colours are used to produce a wide range of symbols and images. The rods are then stretched so as to create a long and thin rod. When this new rod has been pulled into the desired diameter, it is cut to create small disc-like shapes (murrina) which retain the symbol or image of the new rod. We use murrina in the creation of some of our pieces including our rooster.
