What is MSD doing now to control CSOs?
• a comprehensive maintenance program to keep collection system pipelines clean and operating efficiently, • new processes that use existing facilities to store excess water and release it into the sewer lines after rain events, when sewers have capacity available, • process changes that allow wastewater treatment plants to improve their capacity to handle wet-weather flows. MSD has monitored CSO locations to measure overflow frequency and water quality. The information is being used to develop specific plans to reduce the environmental impact of CSOs on local waterways. These are just some of the steps MSD is taking as part of a comprehensive CSO management plan.
