What is MS-DOS on a Computer?

MS-DOS was Microsoft’s generic version of PC-DOS (IBM’s licensed name for it) command-line based (non-graphical) operating system back in early days of PCs. Windows 3.x back then ran under MS-DOS. Windows XP and Vista do not run under DOS. In fact, the black “DOS box” that appears when you use cmd.exe in the Run box is only a “shell” that runs DOS commands. It’s not an operating system, and relies on Windows for all its input and output operations. Even the Start in DOS mode bootup option doesn’t really run DOS. True MS-DOS is gone. Hope that helps.
