What is most at risk from salinity in townsites?
Most people are aware of the impact of rising watertables and salinity on agricultural land, however many people do not realise the effect salinity can have on towns. Rising watertables in rural towns can threaten people’s homes, public assets including buildings, roads, bridges, recreational areas and other infrastructure. Specifically this means increasing risk of flood, causing rising damp in buildings, corroding pipes, undermining roads, increasing building maintenance costs, threatening local water supplies and destroying trees, parks and recreation areas.
