Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service. Mortar Board members represent the top scholars and leaders on their campuses. Since its establishment in 1918, nearly a quarter of a million members have been initiated at 226 chartered chapters across the nation. The Tulane University Chapter, Sophie Newcomb Alpha Sigma Sigma, is the 100th chapter of Mortar Board. We select our members on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service. Members annually plan events including the Last Lecture Series, the Newcomb Leadership Conference for Girls for local middle school girls, and literacy based service projects. Mortar Board began as a Newcomb College chapter in 1958 and in 2007, Mortar Board became a chapter of Tulane University and began inviting both women and men to join to carry out the mission of the national organization. Mortar Board began in 1918 as the first national organization honoring senior college women. When the Society opened its membership to men in 1975, the organization maintained a tribute to the founders and its heritage by strengthening the Preamble to the Constitution by including a commitment to the advancement of the status of women.
