What is MMR and Arithmetic Coding?
A JBIG2 region can be encoded using either MMR or Arithmetic coding. MMR is actually G4 coding. Arithmetic coding is a probabilistic coding technique that produces superior coding to G4 on almost all image types. G4 is optimized for text-based images but codes poorly on halftones. Arithmetic coding works well on all image types. G4 can increase the size of a source image under certain conditions while Arithmetic coding does not. Arithmetic coding requires about 4 times the time to encode compared to G4.
