Missoula is the name of the university town in West Montana. The beautiful town lying northwest of Helena is situated in the middle of five watered valleys and forests. The town is known for its cattle and dairy farms. Missoula is a trade centre and processing centre for farm products, lumbering, printing, publishing, construction, furniture, chemicals etc. However the University of Montana, established in the year 1893, is the largest employer in the town. The city has a population of nearly 61,720, The bitterroot or the state flower of Montana grows near Missoula. As per the US census report 2000, the median income for a family was $42,103. The per capita income for Missoula stood at $17,166. The statistics further revealed that 19.7 percent of the population was below the line of poverty. Thanks to the Missoula University, 38 percent of the residents above 25 have an advanced college degree.
