What is Metrodin HP?
It is one of a class of drugs known as gonadotrophins. It is a follicle-stimulating hormone that has a stimulatory effect on ovulation in women and on the production of sperm in men. What is Metrodin HP used for? In the UK it is used predominantly for strong stimulation of the ovary in women undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or, less frequently, in women who have a hormonal deficiency leading to a failure to ovulate. More rarely it is used to treat men with a hormonal deficiency that affects the production of sperm. Why is it being withdrawn? The Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM) continually reviews the safety of medicines that are prepared from human and animal materials, particularly with respect to any potential risk from the transmission of BSE or variant CJD (vCJD). The aim is to minimise the risk as far as possible by applying a precautionary principle to the consideration of the safety of medicines.
